Residents of Tenbury are a step closer to an improved community hospital as contractors move in to start work on the £1.4 million development.

Work will start on the project, funded by NHS Worcestershire and the Tenbury Hospital League of Friends, at the end of June.

Jean Grosvenor, chairman of the Friends, said today she was delighted they were on the final phase of the development, which is in conjunction with Worcestershire Primary Care Trust.

And if it all goes according to plan the new facilities could be up and running by April 2011.

Mrs Grosvenor said: "It will take about 10 months as we want to keep the hospital open and improvements are to in-patient areas so it will be done ward by ward."

She said the league were nearing their £500,000 target and there are two more fundraising events this summer.

The friends are planning a barbecue on July 17 in Eastham and there will be a Sunday lunch at Tenbury Show on August 8.

She added: "Apart from equipment we have bought, we have had the fund open since 2003 although we have had an aggressive campaign to raise money last year."
