A village near Oswestry could have alcohol control areas in place by the start of the school summer holidays.

St Martins said the zones should discourage young people from gathering in previous troublespots in the village and drinking.

Parish councillors moved quickly when it was discovered that the alcohol no-go areas which should have been brought in more than a year ago had not been rubber stamped.

The crackdown on more than 30 boozing troublespots in and around the town had been ordered by Oswestry Borough Council before the local authority was wound down last year. But because officials at the time did not follow the proper procedures, the orders were never made.

Councillor Martin Bennett said that he did not know when the orders were likely to be brought in. "We now have to wait for the consultation period to end and legal processes to go through," he said.
