Armed police officers were called to a Shropshire town and cordoned off the main road following a "domestic incident".

Several armed officers were called to the High Street in Whitchurch but police said today it was a precautionary measure.

Witnesses said that High Street and Pepper Street were both cordoned off during the incident on Friday evening.

Richard Ewels, West Mercia Police spokesman, said: "A man was arrested in High Street, Whitchurch, shortly after 7pm on Friday.

"Officers responded to reports of a domestic incident. The man, who was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, was taken into custody at Shrewsbury Police Station and subsequently released on police bail pending further inquiries.

"Armed officers did attend. It was decided several officers should be armed as a precaution, based on the information received."

One eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said two streets were cordoned off and customers in at least one pub were asked to remain indoors.
