A mobile catering unit was destroyed in a blaze in Mid Wales early today. The unit, which was located on the A44 at Penybont, near Llandrindod Wells, was reported to be on fire just after 3am.

Fire crews said three LPG gas cylinders were inside the unit, which could have caused an explosion, but crews managed to keep it under control and nobody was injured.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, said today: "I don't believe it is a permanent cafe in the village or anything like that as I hadn't seen it before.

"I think it was just a mobile unit which was left to be picked up, but I heard the sirens heading past the window in the early hours.

"It must be very disappointing to lose your business in this way, but as I say, I didn't even realise it was there in the first place, so I am not sure who owns it."

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said two units from Llandrindod Wells attended the scene.

He said: "We received the call at 3.06am today about a mobile catering unit which was up in flames on the A44 at Penybont, near Llandrindod Wells.

"Two fire engines from Llandrindod Wells were sent and upon arrival is was discovered that three LPG gas cylinders were inside the unit."

The spokesman added that crews would still be at the scene today damping down and checking the safety of the unit.

Dyfed Powys Police said officers attended the scene to ensure the safety of passing motorists.
