Whitchurch will have to bide its time to improve facilities at its train station, it was revealed today.

For many years the lack of access at Whitchurch's station has been a problem, with many disabled people, the elderly and people with pushchairs only being able to access one of the platforms.

Last year residents called for improvements to be made to the station, but at the time funding was not available.

Now leaders of a passenger group have said the town will have to be patient in its attempts to improve access.

John Creswell, chairman of the Crewe and Shrewsbury Passenger Association, said: "There is no question that Whitchurch would benefit from improved disabled access and once complete it would be money well spent.

"However, money isn't available at the moment and the town will just have to bide its time."

New EU rules state that to be legal, railway stations must offer disabled access.
