Three Shropshire men who shot a number of pedestrians out of the window of a car with an air pistol have avoided an immediate prison sentence.

Jamie Rowland, 20, of Tweedale, Madeley; Alexander Baker, also 20, of Ice House Close, Apley; and Thomas Seymour, 19, of Ellis Peters Drive, Telford, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday.

All three had previously admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Both Rowland and Baker were sentenced to 34 weeks in a young offenders institution, suspended for two years, on each count, to run concurrently, ordered to carry out 250 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £75 compensation to each victim. Seymour was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 150 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £225 compensation to his victims.

Mr Phillip Beardwell, prosecuting, said that on October 22 the defendants were in Rowland's car in Wellington and had Rowland's low-powered air pistol with them.

He said: "Whilst the vehicle was stationary Gareth Taylor walked up and started talking to them. Baker shot Gareth Taylor in the stomach. The pellet caused reddening and swelling. A few moments later Rowland was driving along Market Street when Kendal Jones was shot at by someone from the moving car and was hit by an airgun pellet."The court was told Mr Jones was later walking down Haygate Road when he was shot again.

He was later in the company of Liam Troy. A Silver Seat driven by Seymour drove past. Liam Troy was hit in the arm.

Mr Jones went into Market Square and was shot at a third time.

The court was told none of the three men had any previous convictions and were extremely sorry and remorseful.
