A temporary ice rink could be installed in Shrewsbury's Square over winter, it was claimed today.

Adrian Fletcher, managing director of Manchester-based Ice Rink Maintenance, said he would be happy to talk about getting a temporary rink and how the venture could be funded. The firm builds temporary and permanent ice rinks of all sizes across the UK.

Mr Fletcher was responding after hearing Shrewsbury residents were being asked to suggest hopes for the future of the town.

Ideas included a winter ice rink in The Square and a drive-in cinema at the West Mid Showground.

Lezley Picton, head of arts and heritage at Shropshire Council which manages the Square, said: "If a private company wished to approach the council to temporarily install an ice rink in The Square, at their own financial risk, then we would discuss what options there are available."
