A 22-year-old north Shropshire man who crashed his car into a house while over the drink-drive limit, killing one of his best friends, has been jailed for four years.

Denys Crowther Smith, of Primrose Lane, Prees, was sentenced at Shrewsbury Crown Court yesterday after he admitted causing the death of Matthew Latham-Jones on the B5476 Shrewsbury Road at Wem on October 10 last year.

Judge Robin Onions, who sentenced him to four years in prison and disqualified him from driving for four years, said driving was a privilege, not a right.

He said: "In passing the sentence that I do this court does not and cannot attribute any reflection of the value of Matthew's life. All the court can do is pass a sentence to reflect the standard of your driving and the fact a life was lost."
