Three people have been taken to hospital after two road accidents on the Powys/Shropshire border. Fire crews had to cut free some of the injured.

Emergency services were called to the first crash, on the B4393 between Llanfyllin and Llanfechain, at around 9.45am yesterday.

A spokesman for the Mid and West Wales Fire Service said the accident had involved one car which had left the road.

He said: "One person sustained injuries and was conveyed by ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"His injuries were not believed to be life threatening."

At 11.30am, fire crews had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to rescue two people from a car after it collided with a lorry in Llanfyllin.

The two casualties were treated by paramedics and taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Sharon Reynolds, Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman, said: "Police attended the first scene just outside Llanfechain and aided in the recovery of the vehicle, while one person was treated for minor injuries.

"We then attended a collision between a lorry and a car in Llanfyllin where we aided recovery and two people were taken to hospital."

People travelling to the Royal Welsh Show today from South Wales were also facing major delays after a serious road crash blocked the A470.

The road is closed both ways near Storey Arms for investigations after a man and woman were hurt in a crash at 10.15pm yesterday.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the road is shut between Libanus and the junction with the A4059 near Nant Ddu. Diversions are in place and police have appealed for people to find another route to the show.
