Thousands of people who joined a Facebook page backing a Hollywood-style sign in Telford are to have their say on its future.

Members of Great Dawley Parish Council will be discussing the sign, which was put up on a mount in Dawley, at a meeting on Thursday.

And they have sent an invitation to the 2,500 members of the Facebook group, The Official Dawley Sign Group, to go along.

The sign, which has recently been partially removed, was said to have been put up as a protest at Telford & Wrekin Council decision to remove trees from the Paddock Mount, to make way for the new Phoenix School.

Councillor Shaun Davies, parish council policy chairman, said: "I hope many people attend the meeting and put forward their views about the destruction of the trees, the location of the new school, a permanent structure and a way in which the community can thank the group behind the sign."

The sign has become a firm favourite with residents and even civic leaders in the days it was up.

Six friends, all with connections to Dawley, owned up to putting up the sign last month.

They had spent hours cutting out the individual letters and painting them.

The parish council meeting will take place at Dawley House at 6.30pm.
