Couples could soon tie the knot in the floral splendour of Shrewsbury Quarry, it was revealed today.

Plans are afoot to throw open the famous park and its Dingle gardens for people to get married there.

Councillors in Shrewsbury last night said they were in favour of the idea.

Councillor Miles Kenny, who was at a meeting of Shrewsbury Town Council's recreation and leisure committee, said they would be looking at a range of venues for civil ceremonies, including the bandstand, Dingle and the area by the greenhouse.

He said the council would be drawing up plans for a range of uses for the Quarry, including weddings, in the autumn.

The proposal was put forward by a resident.

Councillor Jon Tandy, who is on the committee, said: "We've had a request from someone saying they'd like to see the Quarry used for weddings. I think it would be nice to see civil ceremonies in the Dingle with all the flowers around. I would absolutely be in favour of this, as I would with anything that makes more use of the Quarry."
