Motorists are set to benefit from major safety improvements on a road near Ellesmere.

Shropshire Council highways bosses have applied to remove hedgerows along the A528 in proposals which also include resurfacing and installing new drainage.

News of the road safety scheme follows an incident last year where 44-year-old Tracy Clorley died after the car she was driving left the A528 and smashed through a fence near Ellesmere.

If plans are given the go ahead highways officials hope work on the road can begin in the autumn.

Steve Oakley, Shropshire Council's highways manager, said: "We have applied for planning permission to remove the hedgerow along the A528 near Ellesmere to allow for a road improvement scheme.

"Measures will include the resurfacing of the road, improving the visibility and installing drainage."

If approved, work should start in the autumn with a new hedge being planted before the old one is removed.

The public have until August 30 to comment on the plans.
