Fuel and scrap metal worth hundreds of pounds have been stolen from a Mid Wales quarry, police said today.

Thieves targeted Middletown Quarry, near Welshpool, making off with "a large quantity of red diesel fuel and scrap metal".

Constable Andy Price, of Welshpool Police, said it was the latest in a string of offences in the area.

He said: "Welshpool police are investigating the theft of red diesel fuel and scrap metal from Border Hardcore at Middlestown Quarry.

"The theft took place sometime between 4pm on Thursday and 7.30am on Friday and is one of a number to have happened in the area.

"It is believed that a van was used to steal the scrap metal and police would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the vehicle or seen any suspicious activity in the area to come forward."

He said the diesel and scrap metal were worth hundreds of pounds.

Only last week £300 of red diesel was stolen from a tank in Meifod.

Farmers were warned to be on their guard against fuel thefts following the incident.

And in a separate incident, more than 600 litres of red diesel were stolen from a farm in Abermule, near Newtown.

Police said a red diesel generator was also stolen during a separate raid at a neighbouring farm at a similar time.

Anyone with information on the thefts should contact the police on 0845 3302000.
