Councillor Alan Crowe, from Welshpool, said it was disappointing news
"It's very sad to hear that the garage is closing and I really hope that someone could take it over and keep it going," he said.
"We don't like to see any businesses in the area close but at the moment it's becoming an all too common sight and is definitely a sign of the times."
Councillor Crowe said he hoped other businesses would not follow suit.
He said: "We have a lot of positive things arriving in Welshpool within the next few months, including the Tesco superstore, businesses shouldn't see it as a bad thing but instead see it as good, because it will help attract more people into the area."
Welshpool town clerk Robert Robinson said he had been told that the garage was closing.
