Nationwide Building Society has confirmed it is axing its network of 130 agencies at the end of this year, including four in Shropshire.

The agencies, which are typically based in firms such as solicitors and estate agents, provide basic banking services.

But company bosses said it had decided to withdraw from third party agencies at the end of December as they were no longer economically sustainable.

Agencies that will be affected in Shropshire include Market Drayton, Shrewsbury, Church Stretton and Bishop's Castle.

The Market Drayton agency is based at Meadons Insurance Brokers Ltd.

Councillor Roger Smith, mayor of Market Drayton, said: "The news is a devastating blow for Market Drayton.

"We are trying to improve and build services in the town and want to see things open rather than see things being axed.

"I'm afraid it's the economic situation we are in at the moment and all big companies seem to be following suit and axing their agencies."

Roy Aldcroft, chairman of Market Drayton Chamber of Trade and Commerce, added: "It is a blow to the community because it will mean people will have to travel further to do basic banking like cashing in a cheque."
