Bosses of a north Shropshire day centre have hit out at Shropshire Council after only finding out through a friend that the facility could close on certain days under cash-saving plans.

Margaret Hiles, chairman of the Bradbury Day centre for the elderly in Whitchurch, said she was shocked to find out the facility faces closure on Saturdays and bank holidays under proposals.

Mrs Hiles said: "I couldn't believe it when someone told me about the news. As chairman of the centre and of the Bradbury Trust you would have thought I would have been one of the first to know about it.

"Instead of being told by someone with the power to make decisions on the centre I found out through someone who heard it on the radio.

"I can understand the council need to make savings, but it is yet another thing that seems to be closing in Whitchurch.

Shirehall officials said they could not comment on why Mrs Hiles was not informed, because the item was on the agenda for a meeting due to be held today.

But Stephen Chandler, assistant director of adult social care services for Shropshire Council, said: "We understand this may be unsettling for some service users and we will keep them informed and included as and when proposals are developed and implemented."
