A boarded-up 17th Century hotel in Wellington could be partially demolished and 41 homes built as part of a bid to redevelop the site.

The Charlton Arms Hotel has lain empty since a fire caused by an electrical fault in 2006.

Now Nextdom, which owns the former pub, is making a fresh bid to build homes on the site despite calls to re-open the Church Street hotel.

An application by the Liverpool firm for 42 homes at the Grade II listed building's site was dismissed by a planning inspector last year.

Revised plans have now been submitted for the partial demolition and alterations to the existing building as well as the construction of 37 one and two-bedroom apartments and four two-bedroom terraced houses.

A bat survey has been carried out and found no evidence of the creatures in the building, which is currently on the market for £1.2 million.

A statement with the latest application says: "The revised scheme has been created to give due care and attention to the previous comments of English Heritage and those as mentioned by the planning inspector at the related planning appeal."
