Controversial plans for a Shropshire motel have been given the go-ahead.

Nearly 1,000 people signed a petition against Arthur Bevan's bid to create a motel at Tern Hill, near Market Drayton.

But Shropshire Council's strategic planning committee approved the outline plans by seven votes to four.

It means the 40-bedroom motel, earmarked for a site beside the A53 and A41 roundabout, has moved a step closer - although no full planning application has yet been submitted or operator identified.

Campaigners objected over road safety, pollution, visual impact and it would take custom away from nearby businesses.

About 20 campaigners attended yesterday's meeting at Shirehall, Shrewsbury.

Councillor Tudor Bebb said: "It's not an ideal site but the policies tie our hands.

"It's probably one of the busiest road junctions in Shropshire so at the design stage there needs to be more work done to secure the safety of people driving in and out of the motel and other road users."
