A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after two lorries collided on the busy A483, between Newtown and Welshpool, at Garthmyl just before 6.30am today.
Drivers faced lengthy rush-hour delays following the incident and Antony Topazio, communications officer for Dyfed-Powys Police, said both lorries had suffered extensive damage and it was lucky no-one had been killed.
The road was expected to reopen at around midday.
He said: "The incident involved two articulated lorries.
"One of the lorries was carrying wood and the other jam and the damage caused to both vehicles is very extensive, it was lucky no-one was killed.

"We are doing our best to clear the scene as quickly as possible but a load has tipped onto the carriageway."
A Mid and West Wales Fire Service spokesman said crews from Montgomery, Welshpool and Newtown had attended the scene.
"We had to deal with a fuel spillage and remained at the scene for just under an hour," he said.
A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed one man had been taken by ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
John Evans, communications manager for Powys County Council, said: "The road has been closed and diversions have been put in place for motorists but some delays will be expected."
