A major new housing development of 68 homes could be on the cards for Wem, a meeting has heard.

A planning agent has approached Wem Town Council on behalf of a mystery developer who wants to build the homes off Soulton Road.

Shropshire and town councillor Chris Mellings revealed the details in a report from the town council's planning committee, which he read out at last night's full town council meeting.

He said no formal planning application had yet been lodged. But he said 68 new homes would represent a large chunk of the 1,000 homes the town council wanted to see built by 2025.

The scheme currently consists of detached four-bedroom houses plus two- and three-bedroom terraced and semi-detacheds houses.

The scheme would also include an area of public space and the town council would seek money from developers to help fund a new road linking Shawbury Road and Soulton Road.
