A county school has walked away with a cheque for £10,000 after becoming the winner of the Shropshire Star's Cash 4 Our Schools campaign.

Thousands of pupils from across Shropshire spent six weeks collecting millions of tokens but Churchstoke County Primary in Montgomery came out on top and scooped the top prize.

Ian Roberts, headteacher at Churchstoke, said he was shocked to have beaten 129 other schools to the top spot.

The competition was run before the summer holidays and saw tokens worth millions of points collected.

The winner was judged to be the school with the most tokens compared to the amount of pupils in the school.

Out of the 15 finalists, Queenswood Primary School in Ketley Bank, Telford, was a runner-up and walked away with a cheque for £5,000.

As did the next runner-up, Buildwas Primary School, also in Telford.

The winners were announced and cheque presentations were made at half time during Saturday's game at AFC Telford United by radio presenter Shuttsie.

Mr Roberts said: "We are just shocked to win.

"The children are delighted and when I asked them what they wanted to buy with the £10,000 they said chocolate.

"But we have plans to get two more interactive white boards in the school, so now we can buy those.

"We are really pleased and I would like to thank all the parents, teachers, pupils and the whole community who got together for the project.

"I especially want to thank Harry Tuffins shop in Churchstoke for helping us and of course the Shropshire Star and the delivery people there."

Andy Maxwell, circulation sales manager at the Shropshire Star, said: "I want to congratulate all of the schools for the fantastic effort that was put in.

"This campaign lead to a real community spirit with thousands of people collecting the tokens for their school, it was a superb achievement."
