The merits of Marmite have divided the nation for decades, but shoppers in Telford have fallen for the sweet treat that is Marmite chocolate.

The Very Peculiar chocolate bar has gone at sale at Debenhams in Telford Shopping Centre, and staff are predicting it will be a big hit for Christmas.

But can the product which sparked the you "either love it or you hate it" promotional campaign really win over chocolate fans?

The Shropshire Star took to the malls at the shopping centre for a taste test to try and find out if adding chocolate could win a few new fans for Marmite.

Mother Natalie Bevan, from Telford certainly liked the chocolate, even though at first she wasn't convinced she would.

"It is much more pleasant than I thought it would be, not bad at all. I could eat more of that chocolate," she said.

But her friend Danielle Armstrong, also from Telford, was not convinced. She believed the chocolate left a bitter after-taste.

"I'm not a big fan of Marmite and don't like this. I have to say I am glad I only had a small square of this chocolate to try," she said.

Sarah Thompson, from Priorslee, was also won over by the chocolate despite its Marmite content.

"I wouldn't say it would be something I would be tempted by if I saw it, but having tried it it's not bad at all. It's actually quite nice although it does take a minute to taste the Marmite and then its only a hint."

Fellow willing taster Carol Ingram, working at a stall in the shopping centre, also found the chocolate palatable.

"I know Marmite tends to lead to strong opinions one way or the other but I would say you could like this chocolate even if you were not particularly a big fan of Marmite. It's actually tasty."
