Welshpool's long-awaited one-way system will be opened at the start of December, it was revealed today.

The system is to be put in place in the coming weeks, with roadworks organised to fit around the gas works that are taking place in the town.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said the plan was to open the one-way system on December 5 as part of the town redevelopment scheme, which will also see a new Tesco supermarket open on the site of the former Smithfield.

He said: "The work on the plan has been going very well and we are getting clo-ser to getting things sorted. The gas works are currently ongoing and we will work around this and hopefully the new one-way system will open on December 5."

Mr Robinson added that plans for the future of Broad Street would be looked at in the coming months.

He said: "People are telling me they don't like Broad Street as it is. Some people want the paths narrower and the road wider.

"But then some people say they want it the other way around, so all these things will be thought through and options will be given for a consultation on where we move with it next early next year."

Last week, plans to re-introduce an outdoor market once the one-way system was complete were given the seal of approval by residents and councillors.
