A planning battle between north Shropshire villagers and one of the county's biggest employers has flared up again after an appeal was launched.

Hawk Plant Hire, in Loppington, near Wem, wanted to unite two areas of its business at a new location in Prees, near Whitchurch.

But two planning applications for the firm to store farm and plant machinery on land opposite its new headquarters in Cruckmoor Lane were refused by Shropshire Council when Prees residents and parish councillors objected.

Now the family-run firm, which employs about 300 staff nationwide, has lodged an appeal against the refusal with the Planning Inspectorate.

Shropshire Council refused the original applications on grounds that the greenfield site was unsuitable for industrial use.

The council intends to defend itself at the appeal.

In a statement submitted to the inspector, the council said: "An increase in vehicle movements would have a detrimental impact on the amenities of the neighbouring properties."

In a statement the Hawk Group said repairs and maintenance would only take place at the site between 8am and 7pm weekdays and no later than 1pm at weekends to minimise any noise impact.

A consultation period is due to end on October 26.
