THREE TEENAGERS were arrested and a baseball bat seized following an incident after a school rugby match in Mid Wales, police said today.

The youths were not involved in the match. Police said they were called to the Maes y Dre playing fields in Welshpool following the match between Welshpool High School and Llanfyllin High School.

Concerned spectators had contacted them because they feared trouble was brewing, police said.

Antony Topazio, Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman, said: "Dyfed-Powys Police can confirm that three youths were arrested at Maes y Dre playing fields on Thursday afternoon.

"They were taken to Newtown Police station where their parents were also required to attend.

Weapons

"A baseball bat and two improvised wooden weapons were recovered."

He added: "It has been confirmed that no one was assaulted or received any injuries.

"One youth has received a reprimand as a result of the incident and two youths have been released on bail until a date in October."

Inspector Diane Davies, of Welshpool Police, added: "This is a very unfortunate incident. There were in the region of 150 people, mostly youths at this event, which has been marred by three thoughtless individuals.

"Unfortunately, a whole generation of young people get tarnished by the action of a very small minority."

She said the youths had not taken part in the rugby match.

John Evans, spokesman for Powys County Council, said the matter was being dealt with by the two schools.
