A 30-year-old man who was found dead at a flat in Shrewsbury died of severe head injuries, police said today.

Wesley Morris's body was found at his home in Lancaster Road, Harlescott, shortly before 1.45pm on Tuesday. A man, 39, arrested later that day is still being questioned by police.

Detective Superintendent Paul Williamson, who is leading the murder inquiry, said a post mortem examination carried out yesterday by a Home Office pathologist established the cause of death as severe head injuries.

Shrewsbury magistrates last night granted police a further extension to quiz the man being held on suspicion of murder.

Mr Williamson said: "We successfully applied to the court for a further detention period to allow questioning to continue."

He said investigations were ongoing at the scene in Lancaster Road and at several other addresses.

"We have nearly completed our work at some locations but are likely to continue examinations at the scene for at least several more days," he added.

"I appreciate it has been a difficult time for the local community, especially for family and friends of Mr Morris. We are endeavouring to complete our inquiries as quickly as possible and would again thank local people for their support, especially those who have come forward with information."

People in the area said Mr Morris was unemployed and lived alone at the flat.

They said they could not believe what was happening as the block of flats was sealed off while forensic teams scoured the area for clues.

Neighbours said the man's mother was understood to have visited the flat at 1.30pm on Monday where she found her son had been attacked.

They said an argument had broken out at the property at 8am on Monday, but no alarms were raised as they often heard shouting and arguing from the flat.

Mr Williamson added that a number of people had come forward with information, but stressed it was important anyone not already spoken to and who could possibly help with the investigation contacted officers.

They are asked to call Shrewsbury police station on 0300 333 3000.
