A woman suffered a heart attack moments after an 11-year-old girl was struck by a car outside a Shropshire school.

Both were taken to hospital following the incidents outside Lower Heath Primary School in Lower Heath, Prees Green, near Whitchurch, at about 4pm yesterday.

Emergency services said the woman, who was in the school, collapsed moments after ambulance crews arrived to start treating the girl, who suffered injuries to her head, pelvis and left elbow in the accident.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, where her condition on arrival was described as critical. The girl was airlifted to hospital in Stoke-on-Trent.

Murray MacGregor, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "While crews were dealing with the incident they were made aware of a woman in her 40s who had collapsed within the school."

He said ambulance staff immediately started advan-ced life support, adding: "The air ambulance was flying with two doctors on board, so one doctor travelled with the injured girl while the other went with the woman."

Cathy Rutherford, headteacher of Lower Heath CE Primary School, said: "The incident was understandably upsetting for all concerned, and our thoughts are with those involved.

"Staff are on hand to support pupils at school today."
