An ice skating rink could be set up in Oakengates for the switching on of the town's Christmas lights. Business leaders are trying to raise £1,500 to bring a mobile rink to the town in Telford on November 26.

Christine Orford, chairman of Oakengates Chamber of Trade, said today that it was planned to site the rink outside The Place @ Oakengates Theatre.

She said it would be an extra draw to the town for visitors.

"It would add to the Christmassy feel, and would be something original for Oakengates," Mrs Orford said.

"The idea has received universal support from residents and businesses in Oakengates."

People in the town are also supporting the move.

Craig Pearce, 27, of Redlands Road, said: "It's a great idea.

"Anything that increases the numbers of people coming into Oakengates is good."

And Anthea Winsor, 63, of Woodlands Drive, added: "It's an absolutely lovely idea, kids would love it.

"It would be different for Oakengates and it works really well in other places," she added.

Mrs Orford said that she hoped that either one business would help or that a number of local businesses would club together to meet the cost.

She added: "If 20 businesses contributed, it would only cost £75 each."

Local businesses and traders can pledge their support for the festive ice-rink by contacting Mrs Orford on (01952) 274871.
