Crunch talks over the future of a former workhouse on the Shropshire border will be held this month amid fears it may have to close.

Llanfyllin Workhouse, owned by the Llanfyllin Dolydd Building Preservation Trust, is a historic building which is home to about 15 different artists and holds a number of workshops for the community.

The trust bought the building a few years ago and is responsible for the mortgage and bills.

The group has ambitious plans to create a history museum within the complex and have nearly completed work on a new kitchen and cafe facilities.

But staff have revealed they are "very close to closing as a charitable trust and community venture" and will be discussing the workhouse's future when they meet on November 29.

Leila Price, spokeswoman for the workhouse, said: "We really are struggling. We are stumbling and without funding it is getting to the crunching point.

"At some stage we have to sit down and say that is it. It is really sad because we have done so much with so little support."

She said the trust would like to make it though the winter and into the spring but thinks the decision could be made sooner.

Miss Price said: "At our next meeting we will see what our bills are. It is difficult to know what will happen."
