A lucky youngster will get the chance to turn on Welshpool's Christmas lights this year, it was revealed today.

The town council said a pupil from Oldford Nursery and Infant School in the town would be given the honour of pressing the switch on December 3.

Yvonne Naylor, headteacher at the school, said: "Every year now a different school is going to be chosen to have a pupil turn on the Christmas lights and we are thrilled that we have been chosen to start it this year."

She said a raffle-style draw would be held at the school to decide which lucky boy or girl will throw the switch to turn on the lights.

A procession, starting from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, begins at 6.45pm, headed by Father Christmas.

The procession is expected to arrive at the Town Hall at about 7pm, where Father Christmas will join a walkabout with the mayor, Councillor Estelle Bleivas, and the town clerk, Robert Robinson.

He will then meet and greet children in the town from 7.15pm onwards after the lights switch-on ceremony.
