A man was rescued from his burning flat on the outskirts of Shrewsbury after he fell ill while cooking.

Smoke filled part of the house in Berwyn Drive in Bayston Hill after the blaze broke out in the oven.

A neighbour raised the alarm after hearing the smoke alarm at 8.30pm yesterday.

Paul Fulgoni, watch manager for Shrewsbury Fire Station, said: "We forced entry through the front door and rescued the occupant, who had fallen ill while cooking his meal.

"He was helped to safety and treated at the scene by an ambulance crew. However he did not need hospital treatment."

He said: "If the smoke alarm had not activated and if the neighbour had not responded and raised the alarm, then it may have led to a serious fire."

Just half an hour earlier fire crews had to put out another fire in an oven.

Crews from Shrewsbury went to a house in Spring Gardens, Ditherington just before 8pm.

Mr Fulgoni said: "The family were alerted when the smoke alarm sounded. They evacuated and raised the alarm."
