Two adults and an eight-year-old girl were led to safety after a blaze swept through the kitchen of a Telford home.

The family members took refuge in a rear first floor bedroom as smoke filled the property in Leegomery.

The father, his young daughter and his sister were rescued by firefighters after the fire broke out in Chockley's Meadow at 10.40pm yesterday. They were taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford as a precaution but later released.

Aubrey Thomas, watch manager at Telford Fire Station, said today: "The fire involved a pan which had been left on the cooker. It caused moderate damage to the kitchen area.

"We had two firefighters in breathing apparatus who forced entry into the property.

"The fire had spread to the kitchen units and extractor fan and tubing. The property was heavily smoke-logged."

He said: "The team rescued three people from a first floor bedroom. The eight-year-old was carried out and the other two people were walked out by the team."

He urged people not to leave pans unattended and to make sure their smoke alarms were working.

The father, who did not want to be named, today praised the fire service and ambulance personnel for their efforts.
