Police today issued a fresh appeal for witnesses following a road collision near Ellesmere in which a man died.

The man, who has not yet been named, died at the scene of the accident on the A495 near Ellesmere in the early hours of Saturday.

No other vehicles appear to have been involved, officers said.

Police said the man was driving a Ford Ranger 4x4 when the incident happened just after 2am on the A495 between Newton, near Welshampton, and the Ellesmere junction on the A528. Police, firefighters and paramedics attended the scene, but were unable to save the man.

Inspector Jane Fitzpatrick, of West Mercia Police, today said police were appealing for anybody who witnessed the accident to contact them on 03003 333000.

Inspector Mark Hatton, of West Mercia Police, said the incident happened about a quarter of a mile from the Ellesmere turning and a single vehicle had struck a tree.

Chris Kowalik, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said a senior paramedic officer and an ambulance crew attended the road traffic collision, and the male driver was confirmed dead at the scene.

A diversion was set up and the road was closed for a few hours to allow specialist collision investigators to examine the scene.
