Two sports clubs in Whitchurch have asked councillors to back housing proposals as part of a scheme which would give them new facilities.

Whitchurch Cricket Club and Whitchurch Alport FC want the town council to support plans so they can create new clubhouses and pitches.

The Fieldcrest Partnership wants to develop a 70-acre site between the old railway embankment and Tilstock Road. Land for the clubs would be donated as part of the scheme. It is not known how many homes could be built.

John Allman, chairman of Whitchurch Alport, said: "It offers the possibility of two full size senior pitches and two junior pitches, car parking, a roadway and clubhouse."

Don Pearce, from Whitchurch Cricket Club, said it had teams which needed a maintained ground.

Shropshire Council is still consulting on its Local Development Framework which will designate areas for housing.
