A firefighter has been jailed for life after being convicted of murder after he attacked a man at a wedding party near the south Shropshire border.

Jason Anthony Halling, 29, of Firs Orchard, Bromyard, near Leominster, was convicted of killing Kevin Smith by a jury at Worcester Crown Court yesterday.

He will serve a minimum of 11 years after the attack on New Year's Day in 2009.

The court earlier heard Halling attacked the 47-year-old Bromyard father at a wedding party at Upper Sapey Golf Club, near Tenbury Wells.

Mr Smith died in a Birmingham hospital two days after the assault as a result of his injuries.

The court heard that the defendant was at the party because he was the brother of the bride and the victim was there because he was the uncle of the bridegroom.

In a statement, Mr Smith's family said: "Kevin was a big part of our family and just one moment of madness has destroyed so many lives. He was very much a family man and a great father but unfortunately he will never get to watch his children grow up or meet his grandchildren.

"Kevin had a lot to give but the actions of that night mean his life was shortlived.

"We feel as a whole family that justice has been done but sadly this will not bring Kevin back.

"We would like to thank West Mercia Police officers for their support and tireless commitment throughout the year.

"Today for us is not a day to celebrate or rejoice. However we must all be accountable for our actions and, at times, be prepared to pay the ultimate price for them.

"No court outcome will ever bring Kevin — beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend — back to us."
