Flooding today continued to bring disruption to residents and travellers in parts of Mid Wales after more heavy rain fell overnight adding to the floodwater from burst rivers.

The main A487 has been closed at Machynlleth in three places, with diversions put in place.

Fire crews were called to pump water away from the area yesterday after the Afon Dyfi burst its banks.

The road is closed at Derwenlas because of abandoned vehicles in the road, while it is also closed at the Dyfi Bridge and between the roundabout at Ysgol Bro Dyfi and Glandovey.

The closure of the bridge means a 16-mile detour with locals saying they were amazed the structure had stayed standing, as the floods saw large logs floating down the river.

A woman in her 90s had to be evacuated from her home in Pont Allt Dyfi after it became flooded, but she was not injured.

It is not known when the road will re-open and signposted diversions are in place, but the Environment Agency said today that river levels were beginning to fall.

The B4393 road between Arddleen and Shrewsbury is passable with care at Llandrinio, where flood water is lapping onto the road.

A spokeswoman for Mid & West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said they had had a number of call outs across the area relating to the floods.

She said: "We had a number of calls yesterday from concerned motorists and we just helped out in the area, unblocking some storm drains and assisting any motorists who needed it."

The Environment Agency said the Upper Severn in Powys and the River Wye in South Powys were also on flood alert.
