Peter Pan on Ice at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn
Sam Clarkson, the production manager of Peter Pan on Ice, explains how the show was brought to Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn.
Shrewsbury was transported to Winter Wonderland when the town's theatre was transformed into an ice-rink for the arrival of Peter Pan.
The Russian Ice Stars wowed the audience with their adaptation of JM Barrie's famous story of the boy who never grew up. The production was seen through the eyes of the writer and took audiences on a magical journey from the family home of The Darlings all the way to Neverland.
A penny farthing being ridden across the ice as the curtain opened on the skyline of a London park was one of the many unique touches in the show.
The audience was sent into a spin with ticking crocodiles back-flipping and doing handstands on the ice, pirates spinning on the rigging of the ship, juggling - with and without fire - a pirate skater showing off her expertise with hula hoops, pirates skipping on the ice - with and without hula hoops - and, of course, Peter Pan flying.
Scenery and costumes were colourful and spectacular. Peter Pan, Wendy, Tinkerbell, Captain Hook and the Lost Boys sprang into life and whizzed the open-mouthed audience through the fast-moving production with spins, lifts, jumps and pirouettes.
The magical world of make-believe was brought to life with fearsome Captain Hook towering over tiny Wendy, a disgruntled Tinkerbell vying for Peter Pan's attention and there was even a brief appearance by Peter Pan's shadow.
The show by Wild Rose brought every chapter of the book to life, even down to the Indians drumming and the mermaids.
With Dancing on Ice on television at the moment, the ice stars could certainly show the participants a thing or two — the moves were thrilling and no mean feat.
Master classes from Igor Moskvin, coach to the Russian national team, helped prepare performers for shows which are taking place throughout the country this winter.
The fantastic choreography is the work of Caverliere Guiseppe Arena, who choreographed the opening ceremony of Turin's 2006 Winter Olympic Games.
Peter Pan runs until Sunday at Theatre Severn. Tickets start at £20 for adults and children's tickets are £15 for all shows.
