Plans have been unveiled to expand a poultry unit in north Shropshire which would cater for an extra 16, 000 birds.

Proposals include extending a free range poultry building for egg production at Brookside, Lower Heath, near Whitchurch.

The site accommodates 48,000 birds and the proposed building would increase this to a total of 64,000 birds.

Applicants Broadhay Eggs Ltd has submitted a planning application to Shropshire Council which would also see new feed bins being provided and the creation of one job.

A statement on behalf of the applicant says: "The free range egg market continues to grow, and it will continue to do so because the intensive battery production methods are being phased out in 2012.

"The application represents a proposal requiring significant investment and the creation of additional employment in agriculture."

The public has until February 8 to comment on the plans.
