Councillors in Welshpool will meet this week to decide whether or not to bid for city status.

Welshpool Town Council said it had been approached about city status but was unlikely to take the matter further.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said the item would be discussed at this week's town council meeting on Wednesday.

He said a letter had been sent out by Powys County Council on behalf of the Welsh Assembly.

"We are being given a chance to be granted city status with the launch of a competition to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

"When I saw the letter, I thought it was funny but I think letters are being sent out to every town council in the country.

"The item has already been discussed at the finance and general purposed committee who will recommend to the full council on Wednesday that no further action be taken.

"We have 6,700 residents living in Welshpool and I don't think the town could really be turned into city status."
