When the big freeze took a grip of the county a group of intrepid Shropshire golfers were determined not to let it stop them enjoying their hobby.

Despite the course at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club being covered with snow and totally unplayable, club professional Tim Hall and a team of four greenkeepers lined up on the first tee. But instead of a hole, their target was a snowman 80 yards away.

Each of the greenkeepers had a shot at the snowman but missed. Mr Hall then stepped up and knocked the snowman's head off with his first shot.

The challenge was captured on video, and has received more than 2,000 hits on YouTube.

Club officials are now lining up several more as part of a drive to boost the club's profile and increase membership, and have also got other club members in on the act.

Tom Pain, media manager at the golf club, said: "When the snow came down we realised we weren't going to get many golfers out on the course, so we held this little competition for a bit of fun.

"Some of the greenkeepers on the video were using three woods but none of them really got close to the snowman.

"Tim decided to use his driver to keep the ball low and knocked the snowman's head off with his first shot. It was a good 80 yards from the tee so it was a great shot.

"Most people have the internet these days and everyone at the club seems to have seen it. We've had more than 2,000 hits on that video but we've done several others which have had more than 1,000 hits.

"We've just released a new video on YouTube aimed at boosting our membership. A lot of the members have got involved with the video and it's been good fun, and we have some other comedy videos planned too."
