A Shropshire woman has set up a petition calling for lower speed limits and extra police patrols on a road she claims bikers from the West Midlands use as a race track.

Kate Wadley, who lives at Corfton, near Craven Arms, has organised the petition after residents branded the B4368 Craven Arms to Much Wenlock road "lethal" earlier this week. The speed limit along the road is predominantly 60mph but there have been calls to lower it to 50mph.

She said: "The aim of this petition is to illustrate just how many people's lives are affected by the speed at which traffic travels the route through the Corvedale.

"Craven Arms and Rural Local Joint Committee held a meeting on Wednesday but unfortunately the majority of local people that use or live along this route were unaware that this meeting was taking place and were therefore unable to present their views."

She added: "Furthermore, the route is a well known "race track" for bikers whereby they purchase a car park ticket in the Midlands – race to the coast – buy another car park ticket and post their times online."

The petition at www.ipetitions.com/petition/roadsafetyb436 has so far been signed by four people.

Mrs Wadley said it would run until February 18.

She said: "None of the people that live in this area feel safe."

She said the petition would be presented to Councillor Cecilia Motley, chairman of the Craven Arms and Rural Local Joint Committee, the police and Shropshire Council.
