A man has died following a crash on a Shropshire road.

The incident happened on the A49 in Prees Green, Whitchurch, at about 11.30am yesterday.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "When crews arrived on scene they found two off duty midwives giving excellent CPR to a man who was in cardiac arrest and had a serious head injury. The man had reportedly collided with a car.

"Crews immediately took over resuscitation attempts and immobilised the man with a neck collar and spinal board. The man was transferred by air ambulance to University Hospital North Staffordshire; paramedics continued advanced life support on route to hospital.

"Medics were pre alerted to the arrival of the man who was in a critical condition.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of bystanders, ambulance crews and hospital medics, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at hospital."
