A national teachers' union has called for a suspended Mid Wales headteacher to be reinstated as soon as possible, expressing concern over the action.

The National Association of Head Teachers Cymru said it was "surprised" Suzanne Foster had been suspended as headteacher of Maesydre Primary School in Welshpool last week, as there appeared to be no reason for such action.

Children from the school were sent home on Tuesday with a letter for parents explaining the situation and saying that interim measures were in place.

No reason for the suspension has been made public by Powys County Council.

Anne Hovey, the union's regional officer, said there was no need for the suspension and Mrs Foster should be returned to her work place as soon as possible.

"Mrs Foster was not given any opportunity to make any representation," she said.

"Powys County Council is responsible for this and I look forward to a swift resolution to it with Mrs Foster back in post.

"I have written a number of detailed complaints and have made an urgent request for a meeting at the highest level with the council and the school governors.

"On the face of it, I am very surprised that a suspension was even considered in this particular case."

Last week, Emma Savage, spokesman for Powys County Council, said: "I can confirm that the headteacher of Ysgol Maesydre has been suspended from duties pending investigation into allegations.

"Suspension is a neutral act which is taken in order to enable an investigation to take place.

"Interim measures have been put in place at the school."

Councillor Ann Holloway, chairman of governors, has refused to make any comment regarding the situation.
