South Shropshire residents are pushing for monitoring equipment to be installed on the site of a propose £5 million biomass burner.

The Bishop's Castle Group is backing Bishop's Castle Town Council, which has called on Shropshire Council to start monitoring emission levels at the town's business park before construction starts on the biomass plant.

Councillor Neil Hird said they had asked Shropshire Council to set up equipment so emissions could be monitored at the site before and after the burner was built.

He suggested students at Bishop's Castle Community College could take readings as part of their science lessons.

Karen Bavastock, chairman of the Bishop's Castle Group, which has fought a long campaign against the plans, said: "We are very much backing this, we think it's very important that the plant is monitored."

No-one from Shropshire Council was available for comment.
