A Shropshire man accused of strangling his 24-year-old daughter calmly tidied up the family home while she lay dead on the dining room floor, a court has heard.

Jurors at Leicester Crown Court were told yesterday that Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, 54, got into a struggle with Amrit Kaur Ubhi before he allegedly strangled her at the family home in Telford on September 7 last year.

Miss Rachel Brand, prosecuting, said: "You (Ubhi) became aware that her head had tilted to one side and you realised she was dead.

"You took your leg out from underneath her and presumably started to get up. You pulled down her t-shirt, put her glasses back on her head and straightened the chair and the table cloth.

"You pick up the fruit and the fruit bowl and put them back on the table."

Jurors were also told Ubhi made several phone calls to friends and family, including his sister-in-law who asked him if he had hit the trainee teacher during the scuffle.

Giving evidence for a second day, Ubhi, who denies murder, said he never answered his sister-in-law's question because he was in shock at what happened.

Ubhi said: "The mental state of my mind was not working. I was not thinking."

Miss Ubhi was found strangled at her home on Berberis Road, in Leegomery, by police who called to the house after Ubhi walking into a police station and told officers he had been in a fight with his daughter.

During the trial, jurors were told how Ubhi was a domineering father and wanted to be in control of his family.

He had moved out of the family home in 1997 after he and his former wife, Satinder Kaur Ubhi, Miss Ubhi's mother, separated.

He went on to re-marry but was jailed after attacking his second wife with a chisel.

Harmeet Singh Ubhi, Miss Ubhi's brother, said the family reconciled while Ubhi was in prison, and he went on to live with them.

Miss Ubhi, who was a student at Wolverhampton University and also worked at Monsoon in Telford Shopping Centre, did not live with them initially because of her problematic relationship with Ubhi. She was found strangled within months of moving in.

The trial continues.
