A 24-year-old Shropshire woman fought for her life as her father strangled her at the family home in Telford, a court has heard.

Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, 54, is accused of murdering Amrit Kaur Ubhi at the property in Berberis Road, Leegomery, on September 7 last year.

Jurors at Leicester Crown Court retired to consider their verdict this morning following a five-day trial.

During the trial Ubhi claimed he got into a struggle with his daughter when he was woken up after a nightshift at Sainsbury's in Telford by her playing music too loud on the TV.

Jurors heard how Ubhi began fighting with his daughter before she collapsed on the dining room floor after he held his hands around her neck. Ubhi denies murder and claims he was acting in self defence.

Miss Rachel Brand, prosecuting, said: "By the end if it, he had sustained injuries and all of those are consistent with Amrit fighting for her life as he was strangling her.

"He lost his temper and murdered Amrit. This was not self defence, it was a murderous attack on her."

Miss Nirmal Shant, for Ubhi, told jurors it was Miss Ubhi who attacked her father first by hitting him and scratching his neck when he tried to turn the volume down on the TV.
