A man suffered serious facial injuries after being hit repeatedly in the face with a crowbar in broad daylight as he left a shop in a north Shropshire village, police said today.

The victim, who has not been named, was attacked outside the Co-operative in Drayton Road, Shawbury, at about 10.25 am yesterday.

He was struck in the face three or four times with what witnesses have described as an iron bar or crowbar.

The victim suffered serious facial injuries, including suspected broken cheekbones.

Police Constable Rob Buxton, who is investigating the incident, said the offender ran off towards Church Street and may have driven off in a dark-coloured car.

Witnesses are asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000.
