Motorists in Welshpool were today facing further delays after a collapsed drain resulted in one of the town centre's main roads closing.
Mill Lane was shut earlier today after workers came across the problem.
The road is not expected to reopen for at least a week.
However, Welshpool's new one-way system, which is causing disruption to traffic while it is being installed, is still on schedule to open next Monday morning.
Robert Robinson, town clerk, said: "The road between Greenfields and Boys and Boden in Mill Lane will be closed for the best part of a week while workers try and fix the problem. Unfortunately this is going to affect the town centre because it will mean extra traffic coming through to use other routes.
"Work is already under way on the town's new one-way system, which has already caused some delays for motorists, but this unforeseen problem is likely to make things a lot worse.
"We are still on schedule to complete the one-way system by Sunday night and we hope to have it running by 3am next Monday."
He said letters were now being sent out to residents to explaining more.
"Letters are being sent out today to all residents in Welshpool. They have been written out in English, Welsh and Polish, because we want as many people in the town as possible to take note of what is happening," he added.
"It's going to be a major change for the town and the town council want it to run as smoothly as possible. We realise there will be some minor hiccups but that comes with any changes."
