More than 100 people have signed a petition calling for improvements to be made on the A49 following a string of road accidents.

Residents of Prees Green want measures including speed limits being reduced.

The petition was launched after the death of pedestrian John Abbott from Weston-Under-Redcastle, who was hit by a car.

Residents say the incident involving Mr Abbott was the third to happen in the village during the last two months and was followed by a minor accident at the weekend.

Now they are calling on Shropshire Council to lower the speed limits to prevent any further fatalities.

Barbara Rainford, of Prees Green, said: "Something has got to be done about it before more lives are lost.

"Years ago there were plans for the dangerous bends in the village to be removed, but these were later shelved."

Shropshire Council says the A49 through Prees Green will be surface-dressed this summer when the authority will review and carry out any further work to enhance road safety.
