A charity ball will be held in memory of a Shropshire woman who was murdered by her father.

The ball, in memory of Amrit Kaur Ubhi, will be held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre on August 20.

Miss Ubhi, 24, was murdered by her father Gurmeet Singh Ubhi at their family home in Leegomery in September.

The 53 year old was jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 15 years this month after he was found guilty of murder.

Andrea Cutler, manager of Monsoon in Telford Shopping Centre where Miss Ubhi worked, said they hoped to raise at least £1,000 though the ball, which would be shared between the store's own charity and the Telford nursery where Miss Ubhi was doing a work placement.

Mrs Cutler said the plans were still in the very early stages but the staff who were left devastated by their colleague's death had already set up a committee to organise the event. It will also include a charity auction and county businesses are being urged to help boost funds by donating any prizes.

"It's going to be fabulous. We think there will be about 250 people there and the girls have got lots of brilliant ideas," she said.

"It's been a tragic case and all of the staff here were devastated. I'm sure there will be tears on the evening but it will be very beautiful for Amrit."

Tickets are not yet on sale but Mrs Cutler said they hoped it would be a sell-out.

Mrs Cutler said the cash raised would go towards the children-based Monsoon Trust and also towards buying something for the youngsters at Madeley Nursery School.

Anybody who would like to donate anything for the charity auction is asked to call Mrs Cutler on (01952) 200576.
